Some of these quizzes are kickin my ass. I’ve been well prepared on the readings, but frequently that’s not what we’re quizzed on. I noticed this after the first couple of quizzes and thought I was making the necessary adjustments but I keep getting bitten. A quote comes to mind “the difference between an amateur and a professional is that the professional recognizes his mistakes when he repeats them” :-)
I’m reading up on things I haven’t had to think about in a long time. Good stuff.
One thing I noticed is our professor explaining some very simple, basic shell commands. I’m kind of surprised by that. I would have thought everyone would know their way around a shell prompt. I think having a sense of value in the power of shell basics grep/sed/awk, pipes, redirection etc. is invaluable.
I’d like to try pair programming. I think it’d be fun and I’m sure this old nerd would learn a lot from a youngster. But my schedule is so tight I worry that it’ll blow my week to pieces and risk the project grade. Still if anyone wants to work with an old geek type I’m willing to discuss it.
